ABBY

Abby was only half conscious, half of her in a complete other world, lost in fantasy. As she walked towards her car, she watched herself becoming an amazingly successful young woman. She saw herself able to do or become anything, to be able take whatever she wanted. She imagined a great treasure pulsing in her hands. Giant rings around her fingers, and each boy she walked by she imagined she could have them all if she wanted. Like Britney she could just make anyone kiss her, make any boy do whatever she’d like. Her body thirsted to again taste someone else’s lips, to be popular, and to have anything and everything.

As soon as she left through the back exit of the school and walked toward her car, she half consciously noticed that Britney’s car was parked right next to hers, and it was moving . . . There was someone inside it, which did make sense because she hadn’t seen Britney all day, but she couldn’t stop and talk to her now that all she desired was to get away from school, and to let her new future begin.

Abby put her key into the ignition, shifted into reverse, eased her foot onto the gas. As she cranked the steering wheel, momentarily pulling behind Britney’s car before driving forward, she saw Britney sitting in her car making out with a boy. Her high school best friend had changed so much, kind of like how Abby felt she was also changing into who she was. So typical Britney: the boy must be the Fall Formal date she’d chosen but hadn’t announced to Abby yet. Abby began driving home, not even caring that the Fall Formal date Britney was making out with was Max.
